What is Gymnastics Strength Training?

GST stands for Gymnastic Strength Training and is a method of physical conditioning utilizing gymnastics exercises. It covers all aspects of physical fitness and is capable of producing immense strength with no compromise on flexibility or joint range of motion, hereby differing from traditional weight-based strength training. Progressions are scaled back for adults, starting from complete beginner and leading right up to the most advanced gymnastics strength and flexibility feats.

World Class Training

Our GST classes are designed by Coach Christopher Sommer, long-time U.S. Junior National Coach who has over 30 years experience of coaching elite national & Olympic-level athletes. The same method of structured, progressive exercise has been used to successfully produce many elite level gymnasts and is now being taken up by many fitness enthusiasts around the world. We are proud to be amongst the first globally to share and spread this amazing approach to fitness.

Benefits

GST produces steady gains in both strength and mobility. Here we use the word mobility to describe having strength throughout the entire joint range of motion. By encouraging strength throughout a greater range of motion, the joints open up, restoring lost movements and actually begin to strengthen as well. Better posture is also a side effect as the core is strengthened and weakness and tight areas are addressed, so that the body gradually moves towards balance.

Chris Garay
Owner & Coach

Chris Garay is a trainer and educator based in the Washington, DC area. Chris grew up playing sports before shifting his focus to music in high school. After performing on the national stage as a snare drummer and drumset player, he now directs the George Mason University Indoor Drumline. Chris attended the University of Virginia, where he earned a degree in philosophy and religious studies and did graduate work in social psychology and well-being.

As an adult Chris has trained in a wide variety of endurance, strength, power, and bodyweight sports. He is currently one of the only GymnasticBodies Certified Athletes, Trainers, and Affiliates on the East Coast, having spent countless hours attending workshops and studying under former Junior National Coach Christopher Sommer. Chris is interested in helping change people’s lives for the better, and he is always striving to learn and improve.

Cory Hill
Coach

Cory Hill is an athlete and coach based in the Washington, DC area. Born in Northern Indiana, Cory grew up competing in Track and Field, Taekwondo, and Boxing. Still a competitive athlete, Cory has won both a Junior World Title in Traditional Taekwondo and a Senior National Championship in Sport Taekwondo.

Cory has certifications in Personal Training, Taekwondo, and Gymnastics Strength Training, and he has also learned a lot from his time at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. He enjoys helping people improve their mobility and bodyweight training, and when not in the gym you can usually find him on the beach or trying to crush some mountain bike trails.
